DISCOVER SICILY

After the great success of the four editions, Let me Italian you is ready to launch the fifth and spring edition of DISCOVER SICILY

The weather in Sicily in May is warm enough to swim from the many beautiful beaches found around Sicily’s stunning coastline.

DISCOVER SICILY is an innovative project whose purpose is to make the participants live a professional experience for those who love photography and video making.

The main goal of the project is to valorise and promote the historical and sunning island of Sicily, in Italy, trough photos, reportage, videos made by talent polish photographers (don’t need to be professional). DISCOVER SICILY wants to enrich the professional and academic path of the photographer, moreover it wants to enrich his portfolio.

Why Sicily? Sicily is the largest of the Italian islands. It has long been a crossroads and crucible of Mediterranean culture, and the island today is a fascinating palimpsest in which Greek temples, Norman churches and Baroque palazzos emerge from the rich fabric. Starting from the artistic city of Catania, we will show you the UNESCO World heritage sites, Siracusa , one of the world's most famous active volcanoes, Etna, and the Sicilian jewel "Taormina".

"If someone should spend just one day in Sicily and ask: What should I visit? I would answer without hesitating... Taormina... This small village is only a landscape, yet a landscape where you can find everything to seduce your eyes, your spirit, your imagination."  Guy de Maupassant.

The tour of the cities is organized in collaboration with  local guides, who knows all the sights of Sicily and will take you on a guided tour.

Exclusevely for this edition, the photographer Yan Pekar will support the participant during all the days of the projects. He will prepare daily photography activities and teach to you as much as he can. Yan Pekar is one of our main partner for Discover Barcelona. Exclusevely for this edition, he will come from Barcelona to Sicily.

In order to improve the participants’ professional and academic skills, Yan Pekar will lead several actvities:

  1. Street photography: “The world is a stage” - how to treat people as actors and location as a stage.
  2. Portrait photography: Photo sparring - how to talk with a person you photograph in such a way that creates emotions.
  3. Aesthetics in photography: try to capture a clean aesthetically pleasing landscape image.
  4. Photography as an art of seeing beyond obvious (how to approach location as a pro).

Further, there will be an Outdoor Shooting  with local models  in the stunning location of Taormina.

How is DISCOVER SICILY organized and what is its output?

The role of participant is to explore Sicily with his “camera”. You will work alone or in pair (your fellow could be one your friend). The project lasts 4 days.

Can you take all the best details coming from our island?

Here you are the agenda:

Thursday 9 May - Day 1: Taormina & Isola Bella

10:00 - 14:30  Visit of Taormina & Isola Bella

15:30 – 17:30 Outdoor Shooting with local models

The climate is a dream, its position, perfect panoramas, monuments and luxurious flora and fauna render Taormina a location admired by all who visit it. The city lies on a terrace, with a view of the ancient Amphitheater against a backdrop of citrus groves with Mount Etna engulfed in the glory of the Ionian Sea beyond. Thus Taormina's reputation as a a city infused with poetic beauty and history with views of splendour in plenty, remains true for every traveller.

Friday 10 May - Day 2: Siracusa & Fontane Bianche

10:00 – 15:30 Visit of Siracusa & Fontane Bianche beach + "Portrait photography on location" lead by Yan Pekar

15:30 - 17:30  Street photography: “The world is a stage” - how to treat people as actors and location as a stage.

Siracusa is an historic city in southern Italy. The city is notable for its rich Greek history, cultureamphitheatres, architecture, and as the birthplace of the preeminent mathematician and engineer Archimedes. This 2,700-year-old city played a key role in ancient times, when it was one of the major powers of the Mediterranean world. Siracusa is located in the southeast corner of the island of Sicily, right by the Gulf of Syracuse next to the Ionian Sea.

Saturday 11 May - Day 3: Etna, Europe's highest active volcano

08:15 – 10:15 Leaving for Etna

10:15 - 16:30  Visit of Etna with a professional guide

Mount Etna is the largest active volcano in Italy. Located near the east coast of the island of Sicily, it is 10,900 feet (3,329 meters) tall with a base circumference of about 93 miles (150 kilometres). It is also the volcano with the longest record of continuous eruption.

Sunday 12 May - Day 4: Catania & Issue of Attendance certificates

10:00 – 12:00 Visit of Catania + Photography as an art of seeing beyond obvious (how to approach location as a pro)

12:00 – 12:30 Issue of Attendance certificates

Then, we will finish with a tour of Catania. It is the second largest city in Sicily and the tenth in Italy, with 298,957 inhabitants. Catania is a city, both fascinating and full of surprises, for visitors who will never forget their time spent in the city. With one of the richest repositories of Baroque architecture in Europe, Catania has art treasures, church museums, and Roman ruins, well worth seeking out. We will have a full complete city tour between the beauties of this city and its surroundings.

At the end of the project, it will be released to each participant the Attendance certificates signed by Let me Italian you and all its partners.

Plus, in order to make more visible the job done during the project, each participant will give 20 photos with his credits to Let me Italian you and then he will see them published on: our Flickr , on the Facebook pages What Makes Sicily Beautiful & Let me Italian you , on our official Instagram

Each participant will also write a short storytelling about his/her Sicilian experience and it will be published in our blog: www.letmeitalianyou.com/what-makes-sicily-beautiful

Rodolfo

Hello!

my name’s Rodolfo and I’m 19. I’m attending the last year at the Artistic High School in Florence, where I live.

About one year ago I discovered the media of photography and since then I always take my camera with me trying to catch moments and situations that could express not only the reality around me but also my inner self.

I am a 22-year-old and I have been keen on photography for eight years, since I was in middle school; at the age of 14 I was given my first professional camera by my parents as a present for my good school result, and that was for me a great source of satisfaction, since I had to work very hard for it. Ever since I got it, I started learning photography as an autodidact. I taught myself by shooting, experimenting and watching many tutorials online. I would define myself as a keen observer, I love shooting portraits, models, landscapes but also street photography. I am acquainted with Photoshop's main features, but I tend not to be satisfied with the results I get. In my opinion, the best part of photography is interacting with models and pointing out the best poses and angles, which I believe is the key for getting nice shots. This is going to be the first workshop I take part in. I am very excited and ready to go for this experience. I look forward to starting this adventure with "let me Italian you" and the people I will meet.

Riccardo

Hi, My name is Riccardo, I am 23 years old and I come from Rieti, the center of Italy. I am attending Architecture in Sapienza University of Rome. At the moment I work for a newspaper called “Il Messaggero”in Rieti since august 2018. My interest about photography began accidentally three years ago. My passion for it grew up until becoming a huge part of my life. I love watching the world behind a camera, it brings good vibes and emotions. I like any kind of shot but my best are landascapes, indeed. My main goal is turning my photos into “speaking shots” as Henri Cartier-Bresson said. In conclusion, I would like to tell a story through my photography.
